1. Foundation and Head of the Church

Ephesians 2:20-22 Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. 21 We are carefully joined together in him, becoming a holy temple for the Lord. 22 Through him you Gentiles are also being made part of this dwelling where God lives by his Spirit.

Ephesians 4:15 Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church.

Psalms 118:22 The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.

2. Described

a. Body of Christ

Romans 12:5 so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.

1 Corinthians 12:27 All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.

Colossians 1:24 I am glad when I suffer for you in my body, for I am participating in the sufferings of Christ that continue for his body, the church.

b. Flock of God

1 Peter 5:2 Care for the flock that God has entrusted to you. Watch over it willingly, not grudgingly—not for what you will get out of it, but because you are eager to serve God.

c. The Bride

Revelation 19:7-8 Let us be glad and rejoice, and let us give honor to him. For the time has come for the wedding feast of the Lamb, and his bride has prepared herself.8 She has been given the finest of pure white linen to wear.” For the fine linen represents the good deeds of God’s holy people.

Revelation 22:17 The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” Let anyone who hears this say, “Come.” Let anyone who is thirsty come. Let anyone who desires drink freely from the water of life.

3. God's Love and Care of the Church

Isaiah 27:2-3 “In that day, sing about the fruitful vineyard. 3 I, the Lord, will watch over it, watering it carefully. Day and night I will watch so no one can harm it.

Jeremiah 3:14-15 “Return home, you wayward children,” says the Lord, “for I am your master. I will bring you back to the land of Israel—one from this town and two from that family—from wherever you are scattered. 15 And I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will guide you with knowledge and understanding.

4. Christ's Love for the Church

John 10:11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep.

Ephesians 5:25 For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her

5. Mission

a. Divine Commission

Matthew 28:19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

b. Impart Spiritual Enlightenment

Isaiah 2:3 People from many nations will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of Jacob’s God.  There he will teach us his ways, and we will walk in his paths.” For the Lord’s teaching will go out from Zion; his word will go out from Jerusalem.

c. Witness for Christ

Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

6. Holiness of the Church

2 Corinthians 11:2 For I am jealous for you with the jealousy of God himself. I promised you as a pure bride[a] to one husband—Christ.

Ephesians 5:27 He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault.

2 Peter 3:14 And so, dear friends, while you are waiting for these things to happen, make every effort to be found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight.

7. Perpetuity of the Church

Daniel 7:14 He was given authority, honor, and sovereignty over all the nations of the world, so that people of every race and nation and language would obey him. His rule is eternal—it will never end. His kingdom will never be destroyed.

Matthew 16:18 Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.

8. The Glorious Hope of the Church

Matthew 5:12 Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way.

2 Timothy 4:8 And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing.
