2010-05-16 Ken - Am I My Brother's Keeper

Sunday May 16, 2010 Rick opened the morning service speaking about the miraculous prophesies in the book of Isaiah:

Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

Isaiah 52:13-15 See, my servant will act wisely; he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted.

14 Just as there were many who were appalled at him — his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man  and his form marred beyond human likeness—15 so will he sprinkle many nations, and kings will shut their mouths because of him.  For what they were not told, they will see, and what they have not heard, they will understand.

Isaiah 53 1 Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?

2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.

3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

4 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,  and by his wounds we are healed.

6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him
the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.

8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away. And who can speak of his descendants?  For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was stricken.

9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence,
nor was any deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet it was the LORD's will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.

11 After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities.

12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Cindy led the boys in singing “Here I am to Worship”, “Holy is the Lord”, “How Great is our God”, “Amazing Grace’ and “Mighty to Save”.

We honored Josh who had successfully completed the Pegasus program.  Josh encouraged his audience to stick with the program.  He remarked how when he first came he thought he would fail and end up in jail but he tried hard and with help from staff successfully completed the program.  Ken blessed him in prayer.

Ken Moreland brought the morning message entitled “Am I My Brother’s Keeper”.  He spoke of two brothers, Tom and Ken who were deserted by their parents and made to live with separate grandparents and when they had both reach their teen years were sent to live with their Father and his wife, their step-mother.  Ken the younger of the two was continually abused by Tom and grew to hate him.

Each, at age 18, joined the military and their paths crossed once again in 1959 when their Father died.  Ken was struggling, living paycheck to paycheck, and attempting to support his young family.  Tom was married to a beautiful wife, living in a beautiful home overlooking San Francisco.  Ken now not only hated Tom but was jealous.

Through the years Ken prospered but Tom who was a liquor salesman began to drink more than he sold.  It caused him to loose his wife and son and eventually end up on San Francisco’s skid row.

God began to deal with Ken and his hatred for his brother, Tom, changing that hatred to concern and eventually love.  Many time he sent money to Tom and in 1972 visited with him in San Francisco.  He was shocked by what had become of his handsome brother.  They spent a day together with Tom taking Ken to all the bars in the city introducing Ken as a Jesus freak.  Tom said that he had went into a large church during Sunday worship walked up to the platform and screamed; “There is no God!”

Ken challenged Tom to do the same thing at an upcoming FGBMFI conference at the San Francisco Hilton Hotel, believing that God would somehow make a way for him to make the trip back to San Francisco.  God did make a way and Tom and Ken went to the FGBMFI conference in 1973.  It was their Tom. according to his promise, attempted to storm the platform to denounce belief in God but was stopped and led out of the conference.

Ken told the men with Tom the story of how God had changed his hate to love and his belief that this conference would result in Tom coming to Jesus Christ.  Demos Shakarian, the president of the Full Gospel Men’s Fellowship International, interrupted the morning speaker and told Tom’s story asking everyone there to pray for him.  4000 Christians prayed that day for Tom.  Ken was never to see Tom again.

In January of 1976 Ken received a letter from Tom stating how much he envied Ken’s faith and wished he could walk that walk.  A few months later the authorities found Tom dead in his room.  An overdose of narcotics was the cause.

Ken closed pleading with the boys to understand that they could be Ken or they could be Tom.  It is not too late to make the change.  Now is the time for your salvation.
